Camellia 'Night Rider' (2.5L pot- CLEARANCE SALE
Camellia 'Night Rider' (2.5L pot)
'Night Rider' is a New Zealand-bred hybrid camellia, raised by Os Blumhardt in Whangārei, and it's known for having some of the darkest flowers of any camellia. The small, waxy, semi-double blooms (about 5 cm across) are a deep blackish-red with golden stamens. They appear from late winter into spring.
The foliage is just as striking. New growth emerges a rich burgundy-purple and matures to dark green with a bronze tinge, so the plant looks good even out of flower. It's slow-growing, upright and compact, eventually reaching around 1.5 to 2 m tall and about 1 m wide. That makes it well suited to pots, courtyards, small gardens, low hedges or as a contrast plant among lighter foliage.
Growing tips: Plant in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade, in free-draining, slightly acidic soil or camellia/azalea potting mix. Mulch well, keep it watered through summer, and feed with a camellia fertiliser after flowering. It's frost-hardy once established.
