Ilex × meserveae 'Blue Angel' (Blue Holly)

'Blue Angel' is a blue holly, a hybrid bred in the United States by Kathleen Meserve. It has glossy, deep blue-green leaves with soft spines, set on attractive purple-tinged stems, which gives it a richer, darker look than common English holly.

It's a female plant, so it produces clusters of bright red berries through autumn and winter. For a good crop, it needs a male holly nearby as a pollinator, such as 'Blue Prince'. The growth is slow, dense and bushy, eventually reaching around 2 to 3 m tall and 1.5 m wide, though it's easily kept smaller with trimming. That makes it a great choice for hedges, screens, topiary, pots, or cutting for Christmas decorations.

Growing tips: Grows in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil that doesn't dry out completely. It's very hardy, coping with frost and cold well, and handles clipping easily. Mulch and water during dry spells, especially in the first couple of summers.
