Ugli Tangelo –  Citrus (Grafted)

The Ugli is a Jamaican tangelo, a natural hybrid of grapefruit, orange and tangerine, and a real talking point in the garden. Its big fruit, often larger than a grapefruit, have a rough, wrinkled, greenish-yellow skin that sits loosely around the flesh, so it’s surprisingly easy to peel. Inside, the juicy orange segments have few seeds and a sweet-tangy flavour: sweeter than a grapefruit, with a mandarin-like richness. Enjoy it fresh, in fruit salads or juiced.

This tree is grafted onto disease-resistant rootstock so the fruit stays true to type, with strong, healthy growth and earlier cropping. It’s supplied at a well-established height of approximately 80–90 cm, ready to plant out.

Features

  • Large, juicy fruit with a sweet-tangy grapefruit-mandarin flavour
  • Loose, easy-peel skin despite its rough looks
  • Few seeds
  • A unique, eye-catching citrus for the home orchard
  • Fragrant white blossom and glossy evergreen foliage
  • Grafted for true-to-type fruit, vigour and disease resistance

Size: Supplied at approx. 80–90 cm tall. Grows to around 3–4 m high × 2–3 m wide at maturity and can be pruned to keep it smaller.

Growing tips: Ugli tangelos love warmth, so plant in a sunny, frost-free or well-sheltered spot with free-draining, fertile soil. Water regularly, especially in summer and while fruit is developing. Feed with a citrus fertiliser in spring and through summer. Leave the fruit on the tree until it colours up well for the sweetest flavour.
